How to use Danger Alert

See community reports

Move or zoom the map to the area you want. Published reports appear on the map and in Community reports. Tap Refresh to check again, or Show on map beside a report. No reports does not mean an area is safe.

Choose a place

Umuahia, Aba and World are map shortcuts. For Nigeria, choose State / FCT, then City / Town. You can filter the listed towns. Town not listed? Move the map there or use GPS. A town choice only moves the map; it does not report an incident.

Use my GPS

Tap Use my GPS and allow Location when asked. If blocked in Chrome, tap the controls icon beside the address, then Permissions > Location > Allow. Also turn on phone Location and allow Chrome to use it in your phone settings. If you opened the app inside WhatsApp, open it directly in Chrome instead. GPS is optional: you can always choose the point on the map.

Report a safety concern

  1. Tap the exact incident point on the map, or use GPS if the incident is at your location. Check the point before reporting.
  2. Tap Report a safety concern. Choose what happened and how you know.
  3. If adding a photo, use a harmless, non-identifying image you have the right to share. Photos are private to the moderator, never public. Do not include faces, number plates or personal documents. There is no automatic redaction.
  4. Read and tick the confirmation, complete the security check, then tap Submit for human review. The report stays private until review. Saving only on this device does not send the report to the community.

Reports remain unverified even after publication and expire after 24 hours. Do not approach or follow anyone to make a report.

Enable phone alerts

  1. Move the map to your chosen area, or use GPS once. Scroll to Phone alerts for a chosen area and tap Use map centre for alerts.
  2. Choose 5, 10 or 20 km. Read and tick the consent box, complete the alert security check, then tap Enable / update phone alerts.
  3. Allow notifications when your phone asks. Only new reports published by the moderator can trigger an alert.

This watches a saved approximate area, not your live location. It does not follow you as you travel. To change the area, repeat these steps. Subscriptions expire after 30 days.

Where alerts arrive: on the same phone/browser where you enabled them. On Android Chrome, look in your normal phone notification panel; they may also appear on the lock screen if phone settings allow. They come from Chrome / danger.ablove.org, not WhatsApp, SMS or email. On iPhone/iPad (iOS 16.4 or newer), first add the app to Home Screen and open it from there; alerts appear in the normal notification centre and may appear on the lock screen. Tap an alert to open the report.

Keep browser/app notifications allowed. Internet, phone settings and the small pilot limits can delay or prevent delivery. Alerts are best-effort, not guaranteed warnings. A removed or expired report may leave an old notice on the phone; open it to check the current status.

If you enabled alerts at the old ablove-danger-alert.pages.dev address, turn them off there first, then enable them again here. Browser permissions and alert subscriptions do not transfer between addresses.

Turn off: tap Turn off & delete alert area in the Phone alerts section. This deletes your saved area and subscription. Use this before clearing browser data. An already displayed notification may remain.

Share the app

Tap Share Danger Alert to open your phone's sharing menu. Choose the person or app yourself. If sharing is unavailable, tap Copy app link and paste it into a message. Only the home link and a short app description are shared, not your report, GPS or private photo.

Important

Danger Alert is a free, small test pilot. Publication review does not prove a report is true. It does not detect danger or send emergency help. If you are in danger, move to safety and contact local emergency services directly.

Community reports are unverified

Shared reports stay hidden until human review. Review is not proof a report is true. This app does not detect danger or send emergency help.

Jump to a Nigerian city or town

State capitals and selected major towns, not every settlement. Choosing a town only moves the map. Then tap the exact incident point or use GPS. Town not listed? Use GPS or choose on the map.

Tap the map to choose the incident location, or use your GPS.

Saved only in this browser, not submitted to the community. No reports does not mean an area is safe. Reports are unverified and expire after 24 hours.

What comes next

The shared report feed now has human review. Chosen-area phone alerts are an opt-in, capped pilot. Live-location tracking, additional languages and country-specific emergency contacts are not connected.

If you are in danger: move to safety and contact local emergency services directly. Do not approach or follow anyone to make a report.

Report a safety concern

Anonymous to other users. No names, vehicle plates or identifying descriptions. Optional photos are private to the moderator, never public.

GPS is rounded to about 100 metres before saving. You can choose the incident location on the map instead of your current location.

One photo, compressed to at most 200 KB. JPEG, PNG or WebP input, up to 10 MB. Image metadata is removed. Do not upload faces, vehicle plates, personal documents or identifying details. There is no automatic redaction.

The app cannot sense danger. Reports are reviewed for publication, not confirmed true. Chosen-area phone alerts are opt-in and best-effort. They do not follow your live location.

Privacy & test limits

Device-only test reports contain only category, source type, rounded coordinates and time. They are saved in this browser's local storage and removed after 24 hours on your next visit. Clear all deletes them now.

Shared reports contain category, source type, rounded location and time. One optional compressed photo is stored privately for moderator review only, never in the public feed. JPEG metadata is stripped again on the server. Photos expire with the report, may be deleted by the moderator, and have a total 50 MB storage cap. They expire after 24 hours. Moderation logs are retained for 7 days. Short-lived hashed IP and browser identifiers reduce spam; anonymous means anonymous to other users, not zero operational metadata. Turnstile receives security-check requests. Expired rows are cleaned on submission or moderator access; expiry hides them from the public map immediately. GPS is requested only when you tap "Use my GPS". There is no background location tracking or SMS. If you opt into phone alerts, an approximate chosen area (rounded to 0.01 degrees), radius and private browser push endpoint/keys are saved for 30 days. No name, phone or email is requested. Turn off deletes the saved area/subscription; delivery records expire within 30 minutes. Subscription controls use a random browser token, and short-lived hashed IP data limits abuse. Browser push vendors process delivery requests; encrypted notification payloads contain a report ID and expiry, not your area or private photos. Clearing browser data does not reliably delete the server record, so use Turn off first; otherwise it expires after 30 days. Notifications already displayed cannot be reliably recalled. Shared reports are sent to the private moderator queue and may be published after review.

Cloudflare hosts the app and receives normal web requests. OpenStreetMap supplies map tiles and receives normal map requests, including your IP and the area you view. Do not use the map to send confidential information.

Test reports are always unverified. No real community danger or safety rating is shown. Map availability is best-effort and requires internet access. Nigerian town shortcuts use the SimpleMaps Nigeria Cities Database (163 selected places), MIT-licensed. Approximate town-centre coordinates are navigation shortcuts, not incident locations.
